Some might ask, what does "Deferential" mean? How does it relate to the Word of God? The definition of deferential is, "showing or expressing respect and high regard due a superior or an elder." It is another word for being humble. The Bible says in Matthew 23:12, "But those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted." Humility is so important because it aligns with the teachings of Jesus, fosters a sense of unity and love within the Christian community, helps individuals recognize their need for God's grace, and guards against sinful pride and arrogance. The Bible says in Proverbs 16:18, "Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall." When people become too proud, conceited, or overly self-confident, they are often on a path that can lead to their downfall or ruin. In other words, excessive pride can blind individuals to their own weaknesses and mistakes, making them vulnerable to making poor decisions or experiencing negative consequences. Humility allows us to fully submit to God. God wants us to acknowledge that apart from Him we can do nothing.
